Character Counter is a tool for checking character count, line count, manuscript-page equivalent, and UTF-8 byte size of your text in real time. It is useful when you want a quick sense of text length for social media posts, articles, reports, and similar work. Three character counts are shown at the same time: with whitespace, without whitespace, and with the leading and trailing whitespace of each line removed. You can check the view that fits your purpose without switching settings. ## How to Use 1. Type or paste text into the input area. 2. Check the counts in the result panel. The counts update as you type, so you can watch the values change while adjusting your text. ## Main Count Types ### Characters Three character counts are shown together. All of them count emoji and rare kanji (such as 𠮷) as single characters. - **With whitespace**: For the full amount including line breaks and spaces - **Without whitespace**: For the amount of the text itself, excluding spaces, line breaks, and tabs - **Trimmed per line**: For excluding only the leading and trailing whitespace of each line. Whitespace inside a line is kept ### Lines Both the total line count (including empty lines) and the non-empty line count are shown. A trailing line break is not counted as an empty line. ### Manuscript Equivalent The page equivalent divides the character count without line breaks by 400 and rounds up. A handy reference for the length of reports and assignments. ### Data Size UTF-8 byte size is also shown. This helps you gauge saved or transmitted size, which character count alone does not show. ## Use Cases - Checking whether a social media post fits a character limit, with the whitespace-inclusive count - Estimating the length of an article or report with the manuscript-page equivalent - Checking line count and UTF-8 byte size for code or configuration files ## Things to Keep in Mind - Japanese characters take 3 bytes each in UTF-8, so byte size is often about three times the character count - The manuscript-page equivalent is an approximation and does not apply fine rules such as wrapping punctuation to the previous line **How was your experience?** Last updated: October 19, 2026 ### **Related Tools** - [
