What is Dummy Image Generator?
Dummy Image Generator is a tool for creating placeholder images with custom dimensions and colors, then downloading them right away. It is useful when you need temporary images for layouts, mockups, or upload tests.
It supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and lets you choose from presets or enter custom values from 1 to 4000px wide and 1 to 3000px high.
How to Use
- Choose a size preset or enter width and height manually.
- Set the background color and text color.
- Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
- Adjust the noise level in advanced settings if needed.
- Check the preview and download the result.
The image is regenerated automatically when settings change, so it is easy to compare sizes, colors, and file formats.
Main Settings
Size
You can either use common presets or enter exact dimensions directly. This makes it easy to prepare square placeholders, social sharing sizes, or larger HD and 4K-like test images.
Background Color / Text Color
These control the solid background and the centered size label. They are useful when you want placeholders that are easy to distinguish inside a layout.
Format
Choose between PNG, JPEG, and WebP. PNG is fine for general layout checks, while JPEG or WebP are helpful when you also want to compare smaller file outputs.
Noise Level
Advanced settings let you add noise to increase file size without changing the overall look too much. This is especially useful for upload limit testing and large-file handling checks.
Input and Output Example
For example, if you set width to 800, height to 600, background color to #c0cfee, text color to #333333, and format to PNG, the tool generates a placeholder image labeled 800 × 600.
The downloaded filename follows a pattern like this:
dummy-800x600-20260329-123456.png
The actual file size is also shown below the preview and changes with the format and noise setting.
Use Cases
- Creating temporary images for wireframes and mockups
- Preparing empty OGP-size or thumbnail-size images quickly
- Testing upload limits with images of different sizes and file weights
- Checking how image components behave across multiple dimensions
Things to Keep in Mind
- The tool creates simple placeholders, not photo-like sample content
- Higher noise values increase file size and can make test files heavier than necessary
- Very large output sizes can take a little longer to generate
